mental health suffers from clinical depression, ptsd and emotional stagnation, rooted in childhood trauma. deals with feelings of depersonalization and derealization, imposter syndrome, social inadequacy, and fear of intimacy - all of which he covers, or tries to, with his sunny personality.
trigger warning: elijah's backstory includes a mention to childhood sexual abuse (in the blacked-out boxes), and prominently features the psychological consequences of it. please beware.born and raised in the the high-society circles of fox chapel, in the suburbs of pittsburgh, elijah learned the importance of perfect appearances alongside learning the english language. he learned to fake, to lie, to mask. so, when forgetitforgetiforgetitforgetitforgetit and told him to never tell anyone, or i'llhurtyou,reallyhurtyou, elijah had no problem hiding it: just put on that smile, get the best grades in class, and pretend that you feel like you belong inside your body.
a vibrant child became an extroverted, but deeply alone teenager. as people his age had their first experiences, elijah already youneedtoforget pleasejustforgetit, and even the thought of experiencing those kinds of affection brought a chill to his spine. he preferred being the class clown — but never letting his grades fall below a B+. he couldn't give a reason for his parents to worry. what if they start asking questions? what if they ask about thatneverhappenedSTOP?
he made his way to college, becoming a doctor like his father. that's where he had his actual firsts. his first kiss, awkward and toothy. his first date, which never made to a second. his first time, which was fuckingtraumatizing... but, by then, people were planning their lives with their partners, and, by the time he finished his residency in the pittsburgh trauma medical center, he felt like he was expected to have a wife and kid. he still had never a second date.
fast-forward more and more years. he realizes how much he likes treating kids, patching them up. he wonders what would happen if he made it to a doctor. if he said something. ifyousaysomething,i'llhurtyou. but the time's passed. parents are gone; died grandchildless, and he knew his mother hated him for it. he hated himself, too. he had everything to be good, truly good, in the palm of his hands.
sometimes, when he goes back to his quiet apartment, he wonders if he's still just a seven-year-old boy, still vibrant and untouched in his childhood room, playing pretend at being a doctor.
